« on: Jan 01, 2010, 04:58:43 PM »
has anyone done a manual transmission swap on one of these. I think it would be an awesome truck but i cant stand the autos and they manual wasnt an option with these trucks. would it be pretty hard or expensive? ive done a swap on an 86 4runner and that wasnt to hard but im not sure if it would be about the same to do it on one of these trucks.thanks for any help.

I would first make sure that your crank can accept a pilot bearing.  I know some toyota engines that came with a auto trans did not have the relief cut in them for the bearing although I'm not sure that the 3.4 is one of those motors.

Ok, so I did a little search on ToyoDiy.com and found that the 3.4 has the same crank whether it is used with a manual or auto trans - so a pilot bearing will go in it.  Now, go find yourself a wrecked parts truck to swipe everything off of - don't forget, you're gonna need a engine harness as well as a ecu - maybe even a dash harness.

its not at all like doing it in an older truck. it takes a lot of rewiring and installing resisters(there a thread here where Marlin talks about it). Ii have not done this but i did look into it when i was thinking about buying a d-cab. i will try and find the link's i had on what need to be done.
