E-Locker gearing question
« on: Dec 04, 2009, 08:33:36 AM »
Looking for the experts on this.  I have a factory v6 housing with FACTORY 4.88s in it.  I am wondering if I can swap the 4.88s from the v6 3rd to my elocker 3rd.  I *think* the factory v6 4.88s are a thinner ring gear so do they make a spacer to put behind the ring gear to put it in an e-locker?  I've only built chevy rearends and sometimes you need a 3/8" ring gear spacer for some ring gears thought this might be the same case.  Thanks  :beerchug:

nope,  sorry.  factory 4.88's have a different offset housing,

even if you put a spacer in i'm not sure it would work.  but you never know, assemble it and lets see

after further searching I saw zuk mention they used to have ring gear spacers back in 1985 to install the 4.88s in the 4 cyl housings but I was unable to find any.

I guess I should revise my answer.  I am sure it could be done.  With the right spacer.  If you have the means to make one yourself, then it may be worth it.  Otherwise, You will have to pay a machine shop to do it.  Personally, i would just sell the factory 4.88 diff all together and buy some new gears from Marlin.  It will be easier and then you dont have a 1 off spacer, and custom bolts to deal with.
