'93 2wd Clutch no workie
« on: Nov 07, 2009, 03:57:47 PM »
My 93 2wd 22re konked out the other day. The clutch will not disengage the tranny, and will not go into gear when the motor is running. With the motor off, the trans shifts fine. The clutch master is full and the clutch slave moves properly when the pedal is pushed. The pedal also has pretty good pressure.

Another thing, the battery went dead at the same time, cant imagine it being related but..

Does this just sound like a dead clutch? Ive had clutches go out in the past but it was always showed up as slipping, never had probs with not being able to get into gear.

Any ideas?

My 81 2wd did this about 10 years ago and it ended up being the rubber damper pieces in the disc were coming apart and getting stuck between the disc and flywheel.  Drop the tranny, it's too easy not to do just to check things out.  Strangely, around the same time a guy offered to trade me an fj40 like in your avatar for my 83 4by.  After much deliberation I said no, and I kick myself in the ass constantly for that one  :shake:

that happened on my 84 22R a while ago. i'm gonna lean towards the pilot bearing being seized or the pressure plate being shot. that's what was wrong with mine. easy fix if you've got the tools.
lets not and say we did.

My Buddy's 86 did the exact same thing, we found that the clutch disc on one side only lost all the friction pads. Sounds like your going to have to pull the trans. We ripped the trans out at camp while one of our buddies went into town to get a new disc. Job took 3 hrs out in the desert.. They are a piece of cake if you haven't pulled a trans. PM me if you have ant questions.

Still havent had a chance to yank out the trans, but it sounds like that is where the gremlin is living. Durned right im gonna get a clutch from Marlin. I had the misfortune of putting a clutch in my ol 98 4wd Tacoma that came from one of those Autogons parts places. After putting it in, (on a gravel driveway in the rain) the pressure plate screemed like a wild (made in Kamkook) banshee! After cursing the day I was born, I took the thing out and replaced it with another (no money back, try another one) Lucky Chicken brand clutch. The new one worked ok but had no feel and would slip-R-stall, making me look like a bad driver - which my buddies say is easy to do!
