80/83 engine swap?
« on: Oct 06, 2009, 04:24:35 PM »
I have a chance to pick up a nice engine from a 80 toyota dolphin mini-motorhome for free. About 20,000 on a rebuild with 4 speed tranny.
Question is, will this fit in my 83 yota 4x4 sr5 and mate to my 5 speed tranny? :dunno:
I've used the search engine and haven't found anything specific to this swap.
Does anyone know if this is a straight up swap or is there more involved. My engine has 250,000 mile and is really tired, no power. :turtle3:

Any information would be appreciated.

yes it will bolt right in,  you may need to use the 4x4 oil pan and pickup tube but you already have them

Update: Well we were getting ready to do the swap today when we compared wiring harnesses between the two engines. Nowhere near the same, all pins on the connectors are different from each vehicle and some pins are not on one engine but are on the other. Alternator plugs are completely different than my 83's. I guess a two wheel drive 80 model mini motorhome engine and mine will not get together.
What a shame, the 80 20r has had much engine work done to it including head work with new upgraded valves, rv cam, bored over, etc.
All the mechanical stuff might be the same but the wiring is a nightmare for me... :yikes:

So the obvious question:  since they're the same block on the outside and share the same brackets, etc, why not put your alternator and everything on the 20r?  You can get an adapter from lc engineering to run the 22r carb on the 20r intake, which will likely be your biggest problem.

Well after much thinking about the situation I decided to do a rebuild on my 22r and avoid any further issues. And to add to the problem the donor had to be striped and disposed of in one day and my old bones just don't work that fast. :) I think rebuilding my engine is the best bet at this point, still does not burn oil or knock, just getting tired and slow. Be a good winter project.
