90 4runner T-case ?
« on: Jul 26, 2009, 07:45:03 PM »
I have a 90 auto 4runner that I just bought. Went wheeling and found out that my transfer case shifts into 4 wheel drive and stays in 4 wheel drive until I turn off the motor. Thought I was imagining things. So I went home and disconnected the front drive shaft and put the rear axle on jack stands. With the motor off and in 4 wheel drive the front drive shaft just turns. With the motor on and in 4 wheel drive both the front and rear drive shaft turns. Is the transfercase vaccum actuated? Is there a remedy for this?

i'm pretty sure there is a vacuum accuator on the front axle, located on the axle tube just to the right of the diff., i know dana 30's have a cable you can get so you can manually lock it in, maybe there is one for the runner ifs?

no, the tcase is not vacuum acuated.  i've seen that happen if your running 85-140 gear oil or something really thick, but its usually just a slight spin, not really power being put through.   are you sure the front drive shaft has power going to it or is just a slight spin?

When you put it in 4wheel drive and all 4 wheels are on jack stands all 4 wheels spin in drive. But when it is in park and in 4wheel drive it will not let the rear spin but the front dose.

i have a 5spd in my truck, and if i jack it up off the ground, start it up and put it in neutral, the back tires will spin like its in gear.  but on the ground, you would never even know.  thats a tough one.  maybe find some loose dirt where you can go power brake it and see if the front tries to spin, or if its just friction traveling through the tranny to the tcase thats making it look like it has power to it.  hope i helped a bit.
