stock clutch
« on: Nov 10, 2008, 08:53:21 PM »
I just picked up a 85 pickup minus wheels and head gasket, the only thing I have to put on them is my 39.5 swampers, will that be o.k with the stock clutch?

just going to be a trail rig, it's got a spool in the back and stock gears, open front, stock 22re with headmond header,
thanks

Ah no head gasket? 39s are a little big for stock gears. What Kind of trail? Like rocky trails or what? If your wanting to make it into a crawler, then you will need to double down, beef ur up with that kind of a tire!

I fried my factory toyota clutch with 37's and 5.29 gears so your stock one won't last long with 39.5's and stock gears.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

that stock clutch is going to fry in short order, if you had minimum 5.29 gears, it might be ok..... but stock gears with that huge a tire will fry it rather quickly

Need different gears first.  But a HD clutch every year or so will work I guess...    :shake_head:

I'd re-gear with those tires in either case.  Way too big for stock gears, even doubled up.

I believe this is due to the stock self-adjusting slave cylinder...... (slow and sticky retraction)

After the clutch is fully in, you should be fine.

if your front and rear diff gears are in good shape,  you could just get dual tcases, with a 4.7 in the rear case,   if you ever drive the truck on the road aka, you arent in lo range, it MUST HAVE some 5.29's

Oh i believe your right, it slips for a bit but then grabbed after the engine rpm dropped a bit. but i think maybe its just the pressure plate not being strong enough to slam the clutch together. or maybe the friction material is geared more towards long life and is not grabby enough.

p.s. sorry for the hijack  :beerwhack:
