Newbie from Las Vegas without a direction! Help...
« on: Nov 03, 2008, 12:11:12 PM »
Hi all,

Name's Chad and I have been lurking for a bit and thought I would say hi and get some opinions.

First I have an 87 4Runner. She's clean and obvious from the pics, was going in a different direction at one time. Now I want to build a capable rig that I can use all over. Not really going to get into hardcore rock crawling, but I'd like to be able to take her on something like the Rubicon. Also trail riding in Vegas and maybe a litttle playing out in the desert.

Where do I start? SAS? Bumps/Skids/Winch? Single Geared Case? Dual Ultimate Overkill? I have about $1400 right now to put into her. Opinions GREATLY appriciated!! I'm loosing sleep over where to start....but I am smiling though!

Oh, anyone know where to do to have the SAS done? I have ZERO welding skills and I don't think this is the project to start on.

:welcome: to Marland. Lockers, lift, wheels/tires, gearing pretty much in that order is what I'd do. The biggest improvement is a locker, makes a big difference on where you can get. Now that you've done that you'll find that you are too low so a little lift will help that issue. Next up the tires are now too small gotta fix that problem. Now with the bigger tires you will be a little under powered, you may want to consider lower gears in it while you are doing the locker. You can go with ultimate's but from what you are saying just go with 4.7's in a single case. Doing that is less expensive and also eliminates the expense of duals, cross members and drive shafts.
