I understand that a stronger spring will hold it in but the boot should not be able to pull the shifter out of gear even with an old spring.
i have never had my case get knocked out of gear...
I didn't know your old 2wd truck had a t-case , that would explain why it never popped out!Have you taken your 4x4 out yet?
That is why the spring is shot, the rubber boot should not cause it to pop out of gear with a good spring even a stock one. The spring no longer has enough tension to keep the detent ball in the shift rod notch, and the slightest pressure will make it come out of gear. Even if you find that with the boot removed it does not pop out of gear, eventually it will start to pop out again. The correct fix is a new spring stock or HD.
just for giggles, I will replace the springs the next time the trans is removed..assumig it has to be removed to install the spring{s}
