shifter boots
« on: Aug 13, 2008, 08:27:19 PM »
:usa: what a pain :moon: when doing dual t-cases...the rubber boots caused my shifters to jump out of gear at the worse times due to tension on the levers..I picked up a S-10 "pleather" cover for the trans, honda civic boot for the t-cases-problem solved, cab 90% cooler & quieter.  :blah: no longer have to look at the ground,or smell that exhaust smell. :eyebrow: hope this works for someone. be sure to get the metal mt. plates  :beerchug: cost for all was less than 20$ from picknpull :usa:

Could have just used the Marlin HD shift spring $4.

True that would have held it in gear but it still doesn't eliminate the true problem which is the pressure being applied to the shifter which could cause problems down the road. Better to fix the problem than to mask it with a band aid.

The spring is the problem.

I understand that a stronger spring will hold it in but the boot should not be able to pull the shifter out of gear even with an old spring.

:usa:that was my problem..an example would be driving in 2nd gear w/ reduction box in low...those rubber boots were always pulling on the shifters....rip the rubbers out, problem solved, carbon monoxide in cabin from rigs ahead of mine

That is why the spring is shot, the rubber boot should not cause it to pop out of gear with a good spring even a stock one.  The spring no longer has enough tension to keep the detent ball in the shift rod notch, and the slightest pressure will make it come out of gear. Even if you find that with the boot removed it does not pop out of gear, eventually it will start to pop out again. The correct fix is a new spring stock or HD.

I didn't know your old 2wd truck had a t-case  :headscratch::smack: that would explain why it never popped out!

Have you taken your 4x4 out yet?

:yesnod: did the hell hole trail, no problem...it was those damn rubbers!when the truck flexes,  the entire drivetrain moves just enough while the boots remain fixed to the body-  to pull the shifters out of gear! the pleather boots cover the shifters w/o tugging on the levers

There's 3 plugs on the center plate.   The spring and a ball are behind the plug.

You should be able to get to them without removing the trans.   (unless the allen key on the plug has rounded out)
