22re removal
« on: Sep 20, 2007, 02:26:26 PM »
hey just wondering whats all involved in removing an engine? does anyone know what specific tools are needed..
i know you obviously have to drain the oil, unbolt it from the tranny...unhook the shift linage and wireharness..

just never did anything this extreme, just wanted a heads up..might have someone comming over that knows what he's doing but might be in a bad mood if he sees i did nothing.

but for reference its a 22re bolted to an auto..replacing it with another 22re longblock, so i'm going to need some parts from my original engine to get it running..

thanks in advance

You can do it with basic hand tools, wrenches, sockets and such, ohh, and an engine hoist.
Takig the hood off will make it easier.  I prefer to remove the radiator so I don't smash it.  On an auto I like to unbolt the torque convertor from the flex plate, leaving it attached to the transmission.  You'll need to remove the inspection cover at the bottom of the bell housing and rotate the engine to get to all the bolts.  Support the front of the trans with a rachet strap, 2x4 or something.

thanks for the advice.
so far everything is discconected, only thing left to do before we pull the engine is to unbolt the bellhousing(soaked them in wd40) the TC/flexplate and obviously the motor mounts and it'll be ready to be pulled out!

there are 2 top bolts on the tranny that are a pita to remove, access jsut isnt there.... about 3 feet of extensions and a wobbly works well for this....

If this is a major project, you might consider that mod to give you access to those top two bolts.  IIRC, someone here did it and made a couple of rubber pieces to fit in the holes.

Does someone here know where that is?

It's really not that bad!  I didn't have any problem with the two top bolts!  Best info is to use a ratcheting wrench!  I didn't and now I know why I was told to buy one!
