front main seal/half moon seal
« on: May 04, 2007, 11:08:23 PM »
i have a 88 toyota w/ 22re and it loses a little oil (normal) but the problem just kept getting worse and worse was losing about a quart just driving around for a little bit,  just replace the valve cover gasket and the half moon seals but it did not seem to take the problem away. fresh oil is up on the head  but i don't think that it would be coming from the front main crank seal coming allthe way up from down there. SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME?

When you drive the truck, oil from the front main will wash up the front of the engine as a mist.   Also check the valve cover breather and the PCV.

today i degreased the motor after going through the forums for a couple hours and i have come to the conclusion that the oil is riding up from the front main seal and spraying on the distriutor making it look like the oil is coming from the half moon or the dist. o-ring but it is the front main crank seal going to tackle that tomorrow. vale cover bolts are nice and snug, when i took it off the valve cover was touching the head and the gasket was cracked in places. half moons had sealant on them the new kit said not to use any chemical adhesives but my buddy at the local nor-crawl shop said to put silicone on the lower side of the half moons.
thanks guys this forum is awsome, yotaperformer

Since you'll be that far into the teardown you'll be 5 or 6 bolts away from removing the oil pump. I would recommend replacing the oil pump O ring since it is more likely to leak than the seal. The oil pump O ring has to hold oil pump pressure whereas the front seal does not. They DO fail and leak miserably and they leak as you described. hope this helps. Enjoy leak free peace after your repair.

Just a Idea  I have done 3 now of the front seals.(Different Motors & Trucks)   The old seals had worn a groove in the crank and would still leak with just a new seal.   A seal saver(Thin Stainless sleeve) slipped over the crank makes for a new area for the seal to seat on and no more leak   about 9 $ from napa.

i put gasket sealer on my oil pump oring and it has not leaked since. I also put it on the half plugs it works fine now. When I replace the timing chain the oil pump o-ring got pinched so watch that.
