Brake Set Up, Am I Missing Anything?
« on: Apr 03, 2007, 08:22:47 AM »
Going to completely replace the brake set up on my 82. I can't imagine the stock tiny front discs and rear drums being of much use with 35" and large rubber. I've got a good idea of what I need to use but I want to get some input in case I'm missing something.

- V6 IFS front calipers.
- FJ60 vented rotors
- dual diaphram booster
- FJ80 Master Cylinder
- Rear discs (Sky brackets, Chevy calipers and rotors. Will be using an e-brake).
- Manual prop valve
- LSVP delete.

Am I missing anything or is that good?
Anthony

If you wish to use an e-brake other than a transfer case brake you will need to run Eldorado, Rivera, Toronado rear calipers.

I intend to use the Eldorado rear calipers.
I want an e-brake for inspection sake.

If you wont you can run Monte Carlo calipers, cheaper and use a ball valve for an e-brake. You just run your rear brake line into the cab to the ball valve and then back to your brakes. When you won’t to set then you press on the brakes and then close the ball valve and you’re good to go. That’s what i am going to do, i used sky's brackets and Monte Carlo calipers, I’ve just been keeping mine in gear but it would be nice to have an e-brake.

I'm not sure if the ball valve will pass an inspection though. That's my major concern.

Heard the ball valve is not to be trusted over night, must leak by I guess. I am going to use the Eldorado rears on mine, just need to figure out the parking brake cable setup. If anyone out there has done this some instruction an pic's would be a great help to us both.

They check everything here in Ontario. However it's only a 1 time check when you get plates, not to mention there are crooked mechanic that you can pay off.
I rather take my time and spend the money to know that my truck will be safe for me, my passenger and anyone else on the road.

I'm gonna do some more looking around tonight. I'll post up any links that I find.
I think the ball valves do leak by. Simlar to why you shouldn't use a line lock for an e-brake.

I'd hate to walk out of my house one day and my truck has rolled into one of my cars or worse the neighbours.

The problem with this set-up is that the caliper mite blow a seal setting for a long time (over night)

I've put mico-brake valves on trucks before and it says right on the plate for the valve "not to be used as a parking brake".
A good day working, that's just sick :reg:
