anyone ever put a gm alternator on a yota?
« on: Dec 25, 2006, 01:35:25 AM »
any help would be great:

I have a 80 yota with a 20r, I would love to have some more electrical power.  Has anyone ever put a GM one wire or the like on a yota.  I was thinking I would just have my buddy who works at an advanced auto pick one up for me, like a 80 amp one at least.  any ideas?  thanks

My buddy put one on his truck. It wasn't a direct bolt in, he had to modify the mounting. I haven't seen it yet but it works.

When I installed my Link Ark welder on my 80 yota back in 96, I used a 10dn/12si combo. It had a 100 amp output.

Since the yoda alternator is a saddle mount and the GM style is a post mount, I had to hand ground the front face of the lower bracket untill the GM pulley lined up and then by useing a modified a/c pump to front of cylinder head bracket, I installed it from the front of the alternator to the lower 8mm timing cover bolt.
I also recall having to lengthen the top adjustor bracket and use a longer belt.

I located the power source for the voltage regulator and wired it to the supplied voltage regulator.

It worked great for many years.

I have one on mine. I just welded in a short piece to make the bottom bracket longer and used a spacer (nut) behind it to make it line up. Then added a section to the top bracket which actually lined up pretty well. It works pretty well, they are cheap and you can get them anywhere.

After installing the alternator, I unpluged and removed the factory voltage regulator along with the sub wiring harness from the back of the alternator to the fenderwell.

With a test light, I located the "ignition on" hot lead in the voltage regulator wiring plug that was still connected to the trucks wiring harness and connected it to the ignition terminal of the GM alternator.

Since I was installing a high output alternator, I chose to install a new 8 guage lead from the postive terminal of the alt in front of the raidator and then over to the positive post of the battery.

You can make them work using only one wire too. I chose not to do that because they don't work at low rpm but you can check it out for yourself here.
