Just get one with a warranty (Lifetime or better, ha ha).
They all will fail, I do however recomend Napa. And above all avoid rewound alts as they are expensive, carry short warranties and are prone to over-heating and cooking themselves. I if you want bigger amps i would recomend the a chevy CS130 series they can be had with a very similar body size and mounting patern.  (Same bolts as stock Toyota, thread pitch and everything)

my buddies dad has a 94 yota that just lost his alternator and instead of spending 120+ I sold him a standard 65 amp chev alt. part#213-4011 and a pigtail to hook it up he said it works great and all he had to do was shim the bottom mount and modify the upper adjustable mount.  by the way its on a 22re

Ok, Here is some more info on the alt swap.
The GM CS series has a smaller body very similar to the toyota. The CS 105  (i think) has the largest amperage output  with a mounting method similar to toyota.  It is however serpintine belt driven and the pulley will need to be switched to a vee belt type and spaced out from the alt body.  the tension adjustment on the bracket will need to be modified to allow for the differnces in arc between the delco and nipon. The cs series can be run with two wires (output and field switch) bypassing the factory external regulator(pre 84?).
If you have specific questions or want to do this swap email me and ill get you more details and some rock solid info on what alt to ask for at the parts counter.

This one is all toyota...It has a lifetime warranty and they are easy to change so if it goes out i'll keep replacing them.   A chevy alternator would be fine and dandy but I like things to be simple and easy.
