Tranny swap questions???
« on: Jan 02, 2007, 01:01:14 PM »
So I have a 79 with the fourspeed. I have a 5 speed out of an early 90's 4cyl 4x4. Will this bolt up, are there adapters? Is this a good swap? Should I use the transfer case also? Any help is greatly appreciated

as long as the 5 speed is from a 4banger then it will bolt up how ever it will be longer wich will require a new trans mount new drive lines and probably cutting holes in the floor for the shifters your easeyest swap to get rid of the L43 4spd will be eather an L50 or L52  or marlins L52HD which is what im running, the hd has all the newer g series internals in the shorter L series case, those trannys will be a direct bolt in the only modifacations you will need will be to use a newer slave cylender and clutch fork and throw out bearing you will also need to grind down the raised splines in your t-case input just be very carful not to nick the surface the seal rides on ill try to find a picture to explain that if you want or you can run a newer t-case also you will need the shifter from the new tranny

Along with everything yotaboy said, you will also have to cut new/bigger holes for the new tranny; even though the L43 and L50/52/52HD are the same length. On the L43, the shifter connects to passanger side of the tranny whereas in the other L series, the shifter comes out the top (hence the switch in shifters needed...)
