Tranny swap and questions
« on: Jun 30, 2006, 09:50:12 PM »
So Im helping a buddy swap out his tranny.  Trucks an 85 22re (efi) single cab long bed.  Im not sure what type of truck the donor tranny is from but aparently he claims it was the same type.  Everything bolted up (had to use crossmember from original tranny), the only problem I noticed was:  When attempting to drive the truck 1st, 3rd, & 5th will grind and pop out of gear.  2nd, 4th & reverse all work fine.  Any input on the problem is greatly appreciated.  TIA

sounds like its grinding because the shifter is hitting the edge of the hole in the floor because the shifter is further forward

Ok to clarify, the original trans is a w56 and I believe the replacement trans is a g52 or g54, not sure.  I did cut the floor to allow the shifter to throw further foward and it isnt binding.  Could the tranny just be messed up?  It was laying in some junkyard and he was told it worked.  Seems weird though that only 1, 3, 5 grind.  They will engage but pop out and grind bad when you release the clutch.

The only other things I can think of are: 1. Re-used clutch and flywheel (looked ok), 2. Re-used throw out bearing (it looked like it needed changing but he claims the truck had to run today), 3. Didnt change tranny fluid.
