ford made a 360 and a 361..  they are oldschool FE bigblocks  (332 was the smallest BB).. tell him to ditch that motor for a 390 or somthing  the 360s are notorious for burning valve seals. and dont have a whole lot of power.  slam a 390 in.. dont have much help otherwise though. sorry

The Ford 360 is old technology and there aren't a lot of parts out there for them.  Does it still have points in the distributor or has it been converted to an electronic ignition?  It could just be some burned points.  I think he should just ditch that motor and go to a 302 or if he really wants a b*std, the hard to find 351 Cleveland.

So I take it he doesn't want much power? From a 360 to a 302?? :headscratch: Why would he do that? Yeah the 302 is a good motor but not as strong as the 360/390/351.  And with a 351 you got windsor and cleveland to choose from.  There are a lot more options rather than downsizing.

Or he could go 427,428, 429 or 460.  There are tons of 302's out there and they will make, in m experience, more power than a 360.  The windsor is an option too, but there aren't very many of them out there any more.  A block is getting harder and harder to find.  Just because you are dropping C.I.'s doesn't necessarily mean you are losing power.  A good swap for him to do would be put a 302 Fuel Injected H.O. out of a late 80's mustang into it.

I thought there was some sort of budget here.  The 302HO parts are almost double the price of parts for a regular 302.  A good cheap motor would be the 360, 390 or 351, and if he looks in the right places ( www.fordification.com '67-'79 only) he'll find the right parts/motors for great prices.  As for anything bigger as you listed, just figured a little better than 6mpg would be preferred.

In my looking of 347 stroker parts, i have found a lot more for 351W and C.... not to include blocks... the Winstor is actually plentiful, and so are parts for them.

i was talking about taking a 302HO out of a donor car.  I can find them all day long for $700.  As far as 6 MPG about the other engines, you are selling them a bit short.  I have had Fords all my life.  A 360 doesn't get much better than the others I mentioned.  My parents has a 78 Ford Bronco with a Cobra Jet 429 in it.  That's a heavy vehicle and it got around 9 in town and 12 on the road.  I have a 29 foot motorhome with a 460 in it and it gets 8-9 without a load and with my toy on a trailer, it gets 7.  I calculated the mileage by hand, I never rely on the onboard mileage calculator.

only the 390s dont burn valve seals like a 360 does.

same motor same heads same valve seals.

The dist. is probably 180 deg. out  make sure that the plug wites are routed correctly.

The 360 is a 390 block with a 352 crank, you can put a 428 crank in it and make it a 410 which is what ford made and put in the Mercury in 66 and 67 only. that is my plan for my 360 Fe that is in my 76 f250. the FE big blocks are awesome just about every part is interchangeable. but they are very heavy. when i change the 2 barrel intake manifold i lost 70 lbs of weight (cast iron)
FE eng = 332 352 361 360 390 391 410 428 427
383 eng = 429 460
