dual cases install questions
« on: Apr 01, 2004, 08:43:15 PM »
How long would you think it would take to put dual cases in my 84 extra cab? Will a stock length 85 rear driveline fit or will it need extending or shortening? I have a high angle driveline for the front.  I also have a sky dual case skidplate.  I also have to cut the holes for the shifters, need two becasue the cases are both top shift. Any help would be appreciated.

If you buy a kit, then I would say for the first timer: 1.5 hrs to assemble Crawl Box.
If you buy the unit then its already built.
Then to remove stock t/case, 40mins, then grind drivers side shift rail (1/2") and bolt the two together, 10mins, cut the extra shifter hole in the floorboard, maybe 30mins for that, and then install the dualcase setup, 30mins.

So I would say if you buy the kit it will take maybe 3 hours 15mins or so..
Or if you buy the Unit, then maybe 1 hour 45 mins.

I actually have no idea but this is my guess for a first timer with little experience with drivetrain work. For me I can build a unit (including dissembling a stock t/case) in 20mins, bolt the two together in 5mins, and remove / replace and finish the job in 1 hour flat. With a unit it would only take me about 30 mins to get it installed. Oh thats not including the hole in the floorboard. So another 15mins for that..

Anyone who has experience with installing multiple setups have any speed records they would like to share? :eyebrow:

Must be shortened. Make your measurement at the end of the job as per the instructions.

Thanx.  I started it today with a friend, in no hurry so we took our time.  We got the transfer case out in about 1 1/2 hours.  The hole was already cut (did that at school today) and the dual cases were already put together.  So now tomarrow we have to put the dual cases in and i guess cut down the rear driveline.

I got the dual cases in. I had to take off the cat. converter and cut off the muffler, it got in the way of the crossmember.  The only thing i need to do know is have my rear driveline extended by about 4 inches. I used a stock 85 rear dirveline instead of my tow peice.  the front high angle driveline fits well and i have driven it around the driveway a little.  The speedometer cable doesn't reach either so that will have to be extended.

Hey Hyena,

Sounds really great! Sorry I've been away from the Forum the last couple of days, I've been really busy building a new engine for my car :circle:

So you bought it as a complete unit but it didn't come with a speedometer cable extension? Did you buy it used?

Let me know how the driveline goes on and get out and do some CRAWLING!!!

Well, i bought it used but it had never been ran.  The guy was in the process of building his truck, then he needs to buy a new house so he has to part out hid truck.  It was installed in the truck.  I did crawl a little on the driveway with only front wheel drive.  But i won't be doing any wheeling untill i get my POS front locker out.  I guess it needs new springs becasue it pops like crazy.  O well, thats what i get for buying it used.  I bought it (lockright) with 5.29's installed in a dif for $300.  I would take that since it would cost more to buy 5.29's new and installed for over $500.  Any, the driveline should be coming back either wednsday or friday.  Thanx for the feedback BigMike.

Good deal Hyena - gotta expect projects to be just that, a project. Once you get the grimlins out of the truck then it will be a great ride!

Cya on the trail-

hey Hyena, i had the same problem in my truck... they replace defaults for free no matter what. but it turns out, i had a bent axle housing... so everytime i put it in 4 low, it would put so much pressure on the 3rd, that it would bust the locker

Nice times, I have a record of 2 hours from start to finish....that's tearing out t-case and building duals with 4.7-1.
