solid axle or independant
« on: Apr 11, 2006, 08:54:19 PM »
My friends and I started this argument yesturday. All of us are more mudders then rock crawlers but we do enjoy the more challenging terrain. My hope was to open this up to you guys and see what other people thought. Oh and the background to this debate is one friend has a full size bronco (long travel ind.) and the other friend has a Jeep Cherokee (solid)

Well, yes there is more ground clearance to be had with IFS with smaller tires, which is nice. The downside is the CV boots are pretty easily ripped, and when mud/dirty water gets in there it will make you want to cry. :rivers:

For mudding, IFS does just fine, there is nothing wrong with it. If you have an IFS rig and you mud a lot more than you hit rocks or really hard technical terrain, there is no reason to do a SAS.

Funny thing to do is go by your friend's truck while he's working or wheeling, snap a pencil so he can hear it and go "Oops, your axle shaft snapped!"

and considering the ford mentioned, it uses a ttb setup, so no cv joints, it uses actually ujoints, the bronco in question uses a dana 44

Yep, just like what's in my driveway. I was saying in a more Toyota and most trucks/suv's type of setup.

my personal opinion is to wheel a stock ifs rig(maybe a rear locker) for a year or more before switching to something mild built with a solid axle. you can do quite a bit in an ifs rig, people just don;t do it because they see everyone do an sas when really they shouldn't

i agree with skinny pedal, stay with ifs, put a rear locker in, maybe a limited slip or locker up front, and regear either your axles or your transfer case. if you still can't get to the places you want to go, then do an sas.
