strange noise
« on: Feb 21, 2006, 07:13:25 AM »
hey guys gots a ? for yall.
on my 83 with an 86 rear housing 99 elocker center section 5.29 gears.
anytime the truck is rolling i hear a bump bump bump coming from
the rear. when i jack up the truck and turn the axle by hand you can't
hear it. when you run the truck in gear you can't hear it. only when
it's on the ground rolling can you hear it. there is a dent in my housing
that the carrier may be hitting on. that may be it. it don't sound like a axle
bearing. i just hope it's not my ring & pinion cause i'm goin off to ride this weekend.
gonna pull the diff this afternoon & take a look see. :crossed:

This same senario occured in Moab to a friend., as he was driving you could hear a distinct thunking coming from the rear but if you jacked up the truck and just spin a wheel nothing. So now for the bad news, he had a couple chunks missing out of his ring gear. Sorry hope that helps.

Ditto, happened to me twice...maybe 3 times.  It was helacious at anything above 25-30 mph, but on the jack you couldn't hear a thing.  We noticed the pinion flange was flopping up and down a lot cause I had broken 10 pinion teeth half off.

The gear oil on the tire of the offending axle usually is a sign. Been there as well.

hmm, im getting a very weird grinding noise from the rear and is also starting to seep oil from one of the axle seals. could this be a similar condition of the same problem?

yea gear oil on the tire would have been a dead giveaway. :headscratch:
but there was none. the seal was doing a good job of
holding it back i guess. :yesnod:
replaced both bearings and inner and outer seals.
tested it out and everythings golden.
i guess those deep water crossings got to them after all. :ha_ha:
thanx for all the input. marlins a great board to be on. :turtle:  :turtle:  :turtle:

dawg

ps them bearings are a pregnant dog to remove. :shocking:
