Strange noise from front left
« on: May 13, 2005, 10:15:56 AM »
I get a very loud noise when hitting bumps with the front left wheel.  It is a very loud, metal to metal sound.  I'm thinking I've got a steering knuckle bearing going out.  Do they make a ton of noise when they are bad?  I don't think it's a wheel bearing but I could be wrong.  Does anybody know of some tests to see if it's the knuckle bearing?  I have heard you can jack up that one wheel, put your hands at noon and 6, and try to move the wheel around to test for wheel bearings?

Thanks  :turtle:

Loud metal on metal is generally not a good thing.  The 12 o'clock, 6 o'clock wiggle, like you said, might be a good indication if you have some bad bearing in the knuckle pivot or on the spindle with the wheel bearings.  It could be either or both if you get more than 1/16" of wiggle.

Another possiblity is that the leaf spring may be busted or the shock blown and it's going through the travel until it either bottoms the shackle against the frame...BANG!...or maybe the bump stop is making the noise.

Just some ideas.  Good luck tracking it down.
If it never breaks, people can only speculate how much it was overbuilt.

I would also check my spindle nuts if I were you...could be the wheen/hub/spindle assembly rattling around if they are coming loose...you don't want to be that guy whos wheel passes him on the highway!   :hammerhead:
IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

I just had a loud banging noise under my truck, was the upper shock bushings they just vanished of the mount which let the shock bang around inside. Then right after that the bottom disapeared too. Same loud banging around

I still don't know what the noise is but I did jack the truck up and wiggled the wheel around.  It sounds like it's coming from the torque rod and/or the steering connector rod.  Weird.  I just need to get my stuff in gear and start working on the truck.  I've got all the suspension, IFS box,  and Marlins high steering just sitting in my garage waiting for me  :shakehead:   I have to get my backyard landscaped before I can spend the money and time on the truck
