What lunchbox locker did you go with, and why?
« on: May 18, 2005, 06:01:43 AM »
I'm trying to decide on a rear locker.  I'm leaning towards an Aussie at the moment.  This will be going on my 88 4runner.  Plans currently are Chevy rears, 1-2" over shackles, 1.5" ball joint spacer, 1" BL and 35s most likely.  When I have more money I am going 4.88s and dual cases.

Back to the question at hand, which lunchbox locker did you go with?  Why did you chose that route?  Where did you get it from?  If you had to do it again, what would you go with?

My experience with lunchbox lockers is that they work good for the front but not in the rear. I have ran a detroit E-Z locker in the front of my '84 for years and it has worked great. I installed one in the rear of my buddy's '92 and he drove it for about a week and took it back out. It drove like crap. My opinion would be either spend some coin on a full detroit or save your $$ and weld it.

As for which brand, I have had ez-lockers , lock-rights and a genuine gear Quick lock (made by detriot) and they all worked great, but they were all in the front. I have never had an Aussie locker , but I would assume they work just as good. Good luck

By the way , what the heck is a 1.5" ball joint spacer??  :headscratch:

Hmmm.......I've got a Tru Trac in front (Detroit).  It works very well.  Detroit Locker in the back.  When I put the DL in the back they didn't have a mechanical engage/disengage for my truck (86 runner).  If I was to do it today I would go with an E-locker set up, in the back, for mechanical engage/disengage.

everyone says that aussie lockers are the :pokinit:, i dunno check out the writeup by DRM on pirate4x4.

a ball joint spacer is for ifs, he said he has an 88. it lifts the front 1.5 inches so you can take some preload off the torsen bars and still have good height and a better ride. or you can just put them on and gain 1.5" or crank the t bars too, but thats dumb.

im probably gonna go with the ausse due to its price and the good things i hear, if i hate it, i can always put it up front :gap:

I have a "Quick-Lok" in the rear of my truck, its a re-badged Detroit as stated above. Have had it for about 6 months or so with no ill-effects. Occasionaly when making a tight turn it will cause my ABS to freak out but thats it other than the clicking and tire chirping.

I went this route cause it was cheap($220) from 4wheelparts. Im satisfied since its my daily driver. My next rig will have a full detroit or a spool as it will be trail only.

Looking for a 79-83 trail rig soon.

1. DRM on PBB trusts it
2. It's Cheap
3. Haven't heard of anyone breaking one yet
4. It's Cheap
5. It's made in Austrailia, and they know their chit.

I have been running Aussies front & rear for about 6 months. No problems so far. The rear locker is a little annoying on the street during the trucks occasional use as a dd, but nothing unusual for a luncbox type locker.

Of course, my LC has ARB's which makes for an unfair comparison.

Auto lockers suck ass in the rear of a pavement driven truck period.  Weld the rear and put that lunchbox in the front and you'll be very happy in the long run.  Everyone says that welded rears wear out tires..  Funny but the same guys that say that also talk about their auto lockers chiring around corners...  Hmmm same results just one is free the other is minimum $250 new..... You make the choice.

Aussie in rear and welded in front in 4runner. Welded front and rear in PU.  Jeep has a spool in the 9 inch and a full detroit in the front.  I like them all.

Detroit Ez-locker
Lincoln Locker
Detroit Locker
Downey Limited-Slips
Auburn Limited-Slips
Air-Locker
Dodge corporate Limited-Slips (they came as and option on my Ramcharger)

These are some of the toys I've had in my trucks over the years, currently I am running the Downey Limited-Slips. Yea they have drawbacks supposedly but I haven't found one yet. The Detroit Ez-locker I put in the front of my IFS Yota's (2 times) and they never failed, but refused to unlock on downhill lefthand turns. :dunno: I did the Lincoln Locker to my 84 did just fine and it was a DD that my daughter used when she went to Mesa, Az. when she went to school. The Detroit was in several different trucks including my 84, 85, 86, 86 4Runner, never had any trouble except when the drain-plug dissapeared on day and distroyed the whole rear-end. I put the Auburns in the front of my solid axles since they had birfields and I didn't feel like busting open a front diff with birfields on the trail. The airlocker was in a 95 Ranger that was a company vehicle that my boss tricked out. Those were a love-hate relationship, they were really nice to have but I was always worried that they would not activate when I needed them. They never did let me down, but did fail to activate for several of my friends here and there and is the reason I don't like them. The Dodge corporates came with my Ramcharger when I bought it, they were flawless.

im going to go with white trash here. lunchbox lockers are still "lockers". so no matter what your gonna chirp your tires. i am sure at times a lunchbox feels better on the street, but i have never noticed a welded rear end that much at all. weld or spool the rear unless you go selectable. i would put the lunchbox up front so it will unlock.

take corners wide and give it gas with a spool and you'll be fine. just my  :twocents:
Im an OG

I purchased a Aussie (price and reputation) that I'm still deciding where to put it...It freaks me out thinking about the front because of snowy highway roads, otherwise I would weld the rear and install it in the front.  Any input???

Put it in front and weld the rear.  Even if I still had unlocked axles I wouldnt put it in 4x on the road in the snow.  Thats why you always see soccer mom suv's in the ditches in the winter.  Once you start to slide your screwed...  I just run in 2x and I dont worry about it.

My Limited-Slips are even noticable cornering, I can feel them dragging on the rear. The only time that I have noticed a difference compared to lockers is in the front, never could get it to turn easily on hard (rock) surfaces where as the limiteds just slide around the corner a little.
