A solid axle swap shouldn’t be a problem. You can use a Toyota front axle with no problems. But you will want to use your IFS hubs to widen the trac width. This is a well documented modification. You can even go with a high steer kit like I did if you notch the oil pan. Do you have a KZN135 or KZN185?

Thank you for responding I have a KZN185,  the problem is the transfercase drops the front drive shaft on the drivers side and it needs to be on the passenger side, so I’m wondering which axle from what Toyota I could use or do I have to go a different route??

That’s a tough question. I would have to know more about what market you are in (region of the world) to answer that question.

Well since you’re in Cali I would say order up a Diamond housing with whatever specs you want. If you are more budget minded I think dodge dana 44 axles were left hand diff. I don’t know of a factory Toyota axle that had a left drop. Maybe there were other markets that got them?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but...

Why not flip a Toyota front end-for-end, and then turn the front diff 180 degrees to make it go forward again?

Good idea! Unfortunately it wouldn't work though. The bearing bores in the top and bottoms of the knuckle balls are not perfectly vertical. They are machined at an angle so that the steering geometry has camber.

I have to ask, I'm a little confused. You said this was a right hand drive vehicle? As in the driver sits on the right hand side? In that case, if the transfer case really is driver's side drop you should be fine right? If I remember right, all the old Toyotas in the US market had the front diff on the right-hand side.

Thanks. I was thinking it was all done in the parts that hook onto the knuckles, but I see in the diagram that it's the knuckles themselves.

Lewis: KZN185’s were never available here in the US. The vehicle in question has been imported from a foreign or JDM market. I believe several right hand drive vehicles have left hand differentials; however, we never saw them here. If we had I’m sure they would have been an ideal swap for the Tacoma folks wanting an SAS.
