Volvo C303 - Toyota 1KZTE Swap
« on: Jan 23, 2017, 02:35:48 PM »
Forum Members,

Seeking advice and/or input...

We have a Volvo C303 set up for Expedition travel, that currently is running the original drivetrain (Volvo B30/4sp/portal axles). The motor has started to show signs of wear and will be in need of rebuild soon. Our thought is to convert the motor over to a diesel motor, many folks like Mercedes, however they are heavy and noisy. We have found a few folks overseas who have been successful installing a Toyota 1KZTE motor with R151F and a sliptcase.  The problem is finding a complete swap, motor/trans/tcase, finding the motor/trans is not hard its the transfer case that's the problem. The overseas R151F is not the same as the US version, I have been told.

Goals:
- Diesel Swap, preferably a 1KZTE, will swap to mechanical injection.
- Gain a 5th gear/Overdrive, allow for lower road noise, increase travel speeds.
- Fuel Economy (would be nice)
- Be able to find parts within the US
- Longevity and durability

Issue:
- Overall length of motor/trans/tcase, needs to be short as possible. (I'll get the current length)
- passenger drop in front
- non-center rear axle

Any recommendations for a 5 speed transmission and transfer case, that would bolt up to 1KZTE motor, that are short?

Thank you for helping out.

Current motor/trans/t-case are 59" in length, trans/t-case make up 27 1/2" of that. No much room for anything longer.

Thanks for any input

Sorry I missed your thread. I think a 1KZ would be very well suited to a c303. I doubt you'll miss the underpowered gas motor it came with. Find yourself a R-150 trans and use a v-6 adapter plate. This will allow you to use the RF-1a transfer case with the R-150 transmission.
