w56 only 4th gear works?
« on: Feb 14, 2016, 02:00:45 PM »
A violent clutch dump with sticky tires allowed me to have a nice bang sound fallowed by a non functional trans. Got it home put the tcase in low and just started poking gears. Only 4th works. Any ideas what is broken?

Countershaft or gear on input shaft (that drives the countershaft)

Like he said countershaft or something related to the countershaft. Only reason 4th is working is because it is 1:1 and is straight through bypassing the countershaft. Looks like it's time for a rebuild.

That's exactly what I was leaning towards. Since 1:1 doesn't require counter shaft. I'll snatch it soon and see what it has going on. I got a w56 c today but don't want to cut different floor pattern and don't like how far forward the shifter will be so looking for an a or b if this one isn't salvageable

If you're lucky, the internals may be the same.........

Just swap the insides.

The C is a little different from the A and B. You will notice that marlin has separate rebuild kits for the later series W transmissions.

Trans are super easy to rebuild. You need lots of good pullers tho. Quality ones. Your issue is almost guaranteed a problem with the cluster itself. It's actually very easy to pull the trans apart and peek inside.

In a situation like this, what is the likely hood of internals being messed up? I had the same thing happen but without dumping of the clutch and I was planning on rebuilding it but I’d rather not spend the $300 on a kit when it won’t fix it. Which means I’ll buy one from Marlin.

Pull it apart, then you inspect.

If you believe it's fixable,  replace bearings and synchros and broken/worn out parts.

I touched up a few teeth and the shift forks.

And clean, clean, clean......

I'm lazy. Just got one for $100. Might tear this one down after the swap to see if it's salvageable.
