Coolant Consumption After Head Gasket Replacement.
« on: May 05, 2006, 04:16:06 PM »
Well as title implies, I've got "Coolant Consumption After Head Gasket Replacement."   I used a Rock Head Gasket and copper goop.  I also torqued the new head bolts (coated in 30w) down in the correct sequence in several incrimints to 63 ft/lb. My head was refreshed by a machine shop with years of experience. As a matter of fact, everyday that I went to his shop there was at least one fresh 22r head ready to leave.  I got a cracked block ehh?  Opinions? EDIT: Truck is a 2wd 85, carbed with 238,xxx miles, original block, 2nd head gasket job.

I don't know but I am finishing up my HG swap this weekend because I was using up insane amounts of coolant too.  I hope this is not a bad sign for me!

Ya, hope not, don't forget to tighten your heater hose clamps.  :hammerhead:  My problem is solved and my cooling system functions even better than before.  Well, we'll see, let me drive it for a little bit more to make sure I'm not losing coolant.

Yeah, they are all on the list to be checked before startup

its a good idea to recheck them after startup still in wherever you are working to check for leaks..... at first startup and off, the vehicle wont produce the pressure it sees with it running at op temp, and because of this, it might not leak when parked but might leak like crazy during driving

Ha, leak when parked...which fluid?  My baby likes to mark her territory wherever we go!

imo any coolant loss is way bad news

id say the block not flat of theres a crack some place

do you get bubles in the rad when the caps off? when ive seel cooland compsion ive seen bubles in the coolan with the cap off as the combustion pressure makes its way into the water jacket and then when the engines in the intake stroke it pulls coolant in and burns/pushes it out the exhaust in a big white cloud of smoke usaly

are the 22rs bad on head gaskets?

I would suggest using only a Toyota factory head gasket, more expensive but much more reliable and worth the extra cash.
Also agree with checking the block and head to make sure they are not warped or cracked.
