Dual transfer cases
« on: Jan 07, 2015, 12:20:52 PM »
I'm new to this whole crawler building thing and my bf is a mechanic and we recently got a stock 84 22r. Now with transfer cases I have a few questions is it better to go dual or just upgrade the stock one with better gearing? Also I've heard some people take two stock cases and make a dual is that possible? Or what are some cheaper modifications to make a dual case? Kinda on a budget thanks!

Do a search and you'll find a ton of info on transfer cases.

dual stock cases you will be happy with im positive ,and can be built for relatively  cheap if u find used parts..

ihve had both stock duals, single 4.7 case, and dual ultimates with 2.28 front case and 4.7 rear

call me crazy but i prefer stock dual cases :D

There's a metric ton of information on here about this. Also, there's a Toyota Bible on Pirate4x4.com.

I have duals, 2.28 and 4.7's. I like them and how they perform. A lot of guys like just the 4.7's and a lot like stock duals. It's all up to where you wheel and how you drive. I typically stay out of the skinny pedal and having the gearing to "crawl" is nice. Also, having my type of set up allows for a lot of control on steep descents. However, I wheel in southern AZ where it's 95% dry rocks and no mud.

I enjoy it being a metric ton. Not a long ton or short ton, but a metric ton. Which has the proper SI units.

Long ton 2240 lbs

Short ton 2000 lbs

Metric ton 1000 Kilograms or 2204 lbs

If you see it, its for sale.

I've used the saying "a metric :pokinit: ton" for years, but never knew the actual values between a metric ton and a short ton.

I have dual ultimate's in my Tacoma and love it!  I wheel in muddy midwestern/southern slop and wet rocks and spend most of my time in 4.7:1.  I rarely use 2.28:1, only if i really need wheel speed, which most of the time the 4.7:1 can provide.  I love the gear options that having both 4.7:1 and the stock low range provide, i love the crawl speed as well and i would recomend going that route if you have the $$$.  My second runner up would be for stock duals.
2002 taco ext cab trd, 3.4 5spd.  255/58/16, OME 882s, all pro bumpers f/r, Inchworm front plate, crawler mounted with an mc07 XD to an inchworm lefty, marlin 4.7 gears, marlin 30spline output, RAD designs triple sticks.  Fj 80FF rear with a spartan locker.
