blown transmission gasket...
« on: Oct 20, 2012, 10:31:48 AM »
Why would I get a leak from here? I'm thinking a breather hose or some kind of pressure relief valve didn't work. 1987 22r 5 speed

It would be nice to know why I have a leak here but hopefully I will figure that out when I drop the trans. Can anyone chime in on what I should replace since my transmission will be off? thanks

Are all the bolts tight? Mine will loosen up over time and start to seep right there.

no doubt. All of the bolts are tight. I even loosened the four on the bottom and re-tourqued. The oil still POURS out. This happened going 80mph on the freeway. Kind of weird if you ask me.
I'll have to see if anything came loose inside the trans once its off. I'm having a hard time finding those gaskets on the web though...
Too bad i couldn't just use some RVT???

I don't know why you couldn't use RVT just put it on there and make sure it's not blocking anything, don't torque the bolts anymore then like 5-10 lbs, let the RVT set then torque it down.

MAN, that would save me a bunch of time. I think I will try that first. Is there a breather on top of the trans that might of gotten clogged?

There is a breather like what comes stock on toy axles but if it was clogged oil would blow out the shifter hole I would think. Yay 800th post.

My oil slinger plate was the wrong one for my trans, and it leaked down along the trans and it looked just like your leak.  Just unbolt your shifter boot plate, unless you still got your carpeting/vinyl flooring, you will have to pull that too.  And look at the top of your transmission where your shifter bolts down to.   And you'll see the breather, it's the little metal cap looking thing on the base of the shifter.  Look here at this picture.
