Optima red or yellow top ?
« on: Sep 24, 2014, 08:58:28 PM »
Any one using an optima battery red or yellow?
Have a high output  alternator which is awesome.

The red ones suck. I have had great luck with yellow and blue tops.  The yellow and blue tops are the same except the blue top has the extra post for more accessories.

My next battery will be a sears diehard odessy. I have heard that they need to have a tender always hooked up if the vehicle is not a daily driver.

Odyssey, I have been running them for at least ten years without a problem. Have never had a battery tender on them and it starts every time I turn the key, sometimes it sits for a couple of months.

Optima's use to be a great battery until they started making them in Mexico.

I have had my yellow top for several years with no issues. That being said when it dies I'll probably replace it with a Sears Platinum.

I ran an exide "orbital" for 10 years. I now run an exide orbital starting battery and an exide orbital deep cycle now that I have a dual battery set-up.

Is one isolated so it doesn't get any parasitic drain?

Not yet. Just running them the way the TOYOTA factory Diesel wiring harness does. I plan on getting the National Luna Battery Manager Kit. For now I plug it into my battery tender once a month.

as already stated, they used to be really good...... the past few years, maybe decade, they have gone down the tube......

I used to have an old red top, and it was awesome... eventually it died though, and I used something else....

do you have to have a sealed battery? if not, I have been really happy with the duralast gold series from autozone.... aside from that, the odysseys are also a great battery....
