Frame Reinforcement with SAS ?
« on: May 27, 2012, 12:14:51 AM »
Finally.........started on my SAS Friday. Got everything cut off and found a few spots that were inside the bracketry rusted through. I'm in Arizona and I found frame rust. I couldn't believe it. I guess water got in and stayed in for a long time. The frame seems solid except for three 1/4" holes behind the main IFS brackets.

I just welded the holes shut and ground everything smooth. I really think I should weld on some reinforcing plates but, I have to get this running by Tues night to get to work. I can make a pattern and make some when I get some steel or just buy some from Ruff Stuff. I realize the shock mounts will probably have to come off if I do it later.

I can't wheel it until I get my front drive line made. I haven't even got my big boy tires yet. I'm trying to hustle and get it drivable on this 4 day weekend.

What do you all think? Safe to run on the street? I haven't seen many threads mentioning this. Should I even worry about it?

If anything, keep the shock mounts off until you have the time to plate it.  I drove to work without shocks a time or two.  It wasn't as bad as you might think...  I wouldn't hit the interstate or anything though.

Plate it, I didn't plate mine as much as a would now. I only plated the front because I notched my frame and I didn't have rust. But definitely plate it

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to go ahead and plate it just to be safe. Now is the best time.

Just to be clear though. My frame isn't a total rust out. Just those small holes where water got trapped in the IFS bracket. On outside of frame rail only. The rest is solid.
