Tie rod reinforcement?
« on: Dec 12, 2007, 06:41:54 PM »
I was thinking if this would be a good or bad idea.

Take a piece of .120 wall angle iron, and either clamp it or weld it to the front of the tierod to give it a point.

The possable pros

 make rod more riggid
 deflect objects from dirrect blow
 ?????????????

But what cons
Could it make it so that instead of bending rods you bust rod ends?
What other side effects could there be?

i welded angle iron on top of mine...provides strength and doesn't lose clearance.

thats exactly what i was thinking...  just mountedto the front to deflect due to the point.  doesnt look like there would be any clearance reduction either.

If you are willing to go through that much work why not do it right and sleeve the TR.  It's real simple to remove one TRE and slide the appropriate size tubing over the TR, a quick weld at each end and reassemble.  More strength with less effort.  Besides, all that welding along the length of the TR is no good for the strength of it.

The angle iron does add a nice redneck touch though...

x 2....just sleeve it...the increase in strength is worth the decrease in ground clearance IMO

because I got the angle iron for 3.00 and it could have been done on the truck if I had wanted.  Redneck or not, i have not bent it yet.  Don't you see that I am the Bootyfab King?  :king:

:dunno:  I've seen it both ways. I'd sleeve it if it was me though.  We fixed BLINGNXJs bent tie rod with a peice of pipe (Matt, you still owe me a cheater bar!!! )  and its still on, and held up very well.  Sleeving it gives it good support all the way around.  We just took one TRE off, bent the tie rod back (sorta) and slid/hammered the pipe on.
around, BLINGN actually
You can kinda see it here (this is the trip we bent it on)
