Mounting Steering box
« on: Nov 16, 2011, 09:53:50 AM »
Okay i'm reading through all these threads of people cutting their body mounts and all this stuff to move they're box forward. But what I want to know is why don't more people just use a flat pitman arm and clock the box to do so, I've moved my front axle forward 4 inches on the 2 trucks I've had and just clocked my box enough to run a flat pitman arm and put it as close to the body mount as possible without cutting, and I've never had any problems. I'll post up some pictures of my box placement when i get the chance, hopefully giving some people a little inspiration to do something that's apparently different and less popular.
pic of how far my axle is forward

if it fits its fine. some people dont want to spend the money on a flat pitman arm.

one of the main reasons to move the box forward is to keep the tie rod and drag link parallel so reduce bump steer and also to stop them from binding up when the suspension cycles.  a flat pitman arm might fix an issue of the tie rod hitting the pitman arm, but thats all its going to do.  take a lool ank make sure your as parallel as can be.  i moved my front axle forward 5.5 inches and had to cut the core support and body mount to get the box forward far enough to make everyhthing parallel.  just my  :twocents:

pretty close to parallel, drag links about 2 inches above the tie rod at the box. I moved my box forward, just didn't leave it rotated to use a drop pitman arm. Plus my trucks pretty low for a IFS frame so it might just be other people aren't going through as much work to make they're trucks low enough to use a flat pitman arm and keep things parallel
