will a 2wd 5 speed work for my 4wd
« on: Apr 28, 2011, 11:37:40 AM »
I just bought a 80 hilux 4x4 and it has a 20r with a 4 speed. i wanna swap it out for a 22r with a 5 speed. i found a mated pair on craigs list for $500 but its out of a 2wd. what would i have to do to make this this transmission work in my truck? please dont say if you have to ask then you cant do it. im not new to doing this kind of work its just that ive always been a chevy guy. this is my first toyota and i need to get to know it as well as i know my 75 chevy. thanks for any help.

the 20R is a great engine once its been modified.  stock they were bullet proof. you could stand on the gas pedal for a week and not blow it up but the 190 cfm carb and the small tight exhaust were big hold backs.
put a 3236 weber and a long tube header on it and hold on for the ride.   the best engine of all is when you take a 22R block (80-84) and put all the 20R stuff on it. basically making a big bore 20R.  I ran a 20R/22R hybrid for a few years but  dropped a valve at 7200 rpm   I was running a .460 lift cam (still running it) and had a heavy foot.

the transmission you probably have is the L43.   its  not that great honestly it has a 3.67:1 first gear where all the later transmissions have the 3.93:1 first gear

what I need to know is what year is the 22R and 2wd transmission??

the 2wd and hte 4wd trannies are internally the same, xcept the output shafts..... swapping them out to a 4x4 one will need the back half of the tranny case, and also a full rebuild to replace the output shaft......

or you would have to do custom driveshafts and run a divorced tcase setup

otherwise.... you would just be turning your truck into a rwd

the 87 2wd tranny is NOT in any way similar to the L43 he has.

I think he meant that an 87 2wd would be the same as an 87 4wd and my l43 would be the same as a 2wd l43. if im correnct in my understanding, and thats what he meant, is it true?

I would look for a 4WD trans from and '81-'83 they drop right in and pluss it will probably come with an extra transfer case which will be cool later on.  I ran my 4 speed hard for a year or so before it grenaded...

well i scored another truck. this ones a 81 with a 22r and a 5 speed. i wanna get everything from motor to drivelines donr just the way i want it in the 81 and then once its all done swap it all into the 80. the 80 is a much cleaner body. in the mean tim i need to get my 80 running good with the motor thats in it. somtimes it wont idle. when i bought it the guy said it was a rebuilt carb. its got good compression. the spark plugs are clean and propperly gapped. why does it act this way? when i first start it it surges bad untill it warms up then once ive driven it and its really warm most of the time if i stop and take my foot all the way off the gas it will die. besides that both trucks have a pretty noticeable flat spot in the throttle.

toss the little 20R carb and put a 22R exhaust or a header on and you'll be happily surprised

a 20R head and intake on the 22R block is easy and simple horsepower :burnout:
