22r with 20r head
« on: Mar 02, 2009, 11:34:49 PM »
my question is simply this: i want to build a 22r with a 20r head, what specific parts do i need and out or off what year 22r do i need them from. from what i've been told there is a differance between two groups of years, but beyond that my knowledge is limited.

There are two family's of R engines.

'75 to '84 20 and 22R's: thick 100mm head, tall pistons and block with a 98 pin timing chain.
'85 to '95 22R's: thinner 96mm head, flat top pistons and shorter block height with a 96 pin timing chain.

Therefore, you must use an '81 to '84 22R short block. Oil pan, timing cover, and valve cover can all be reused.

any year 20R can be used,   to my knowledge all 20R's had the same size valves,  however all 20R heads didnt have the mounting for the pwr steering pump

i ran a 79 20R head, intake, timing cover, oil pump, on a 82 model 22R block for a few years,  it was VERY fun to drive

btw  run the aluminum rocker arms,

you can use the crank shaft and connecting rods from a 20R,22R or 22RE of any year  they are all the same

oil pump drive and timing gear are the only difference and they are easily swapped out

what do the aluminum rocker arms come off of? the 22r, 20r or aftermarket?
22R's had them,  also  aftermarket but be careful, i have seen some "aftermarket" rockers (autozone) come apart

It will give you more high end power but will not help you down low where you need it.

If your truck came w a 20R vin tag then it will appear stock
Other than having lo co levels and all your smog stuff working properly
Including the evap system you should be fine just tell them
Is stock rebuild,    Pre test is good to do also some times they are free!!

Good luck.   The only reason I don't do this swap is the power steering bracket .

That's the thing with California it all revolves around smog since they didn't follow the 25 year rule just because the truck came with smog equipment on it. I think the muscle cars out there are putting out way more pollutants than I am.
