w56 install Q's
« on: Nov 11, 2010, 01:54:44 PM »
-Is the pilot bearing, right behind a plate in the rear of the bell housing? And this holds most of the load correct? I was wondering if i should replace it while the tranny is out or just leave it. the w56 has approx. 130k on it
-Also i have a used output bearing for the w56, its not nearly as worn as the output bearing from my L45, should i just buy a new output bearing for the w56 or use the old one?
-Another question, my fly wheel has about 6-7 deep heat cracks that go 1/2 way from the center of the flywheel to outside, all of which go all the way through the 1/4 inch of my flywheel. Im going to take it to a shop to see if its usable, not looking like it is tho. So my question is, Are marlin's flywheels safe for everyday driving? And are they compatible w/ and autozone clutch?

Haha ok i realized what the pilot bearing was dont i feel like a jacka$$  :gap:  So then most of the load is on the throwout bearing? or is it on an internal bearing in the trans?  And what exactly does the pilot bearing do then, just hold the shaft in place? because mine is 30 years old at this point, should i replace the pilot bearing if im putting up the w56?

Ok i'lle take em one at a time.

The pilot bearing is the small bearing in the end of the crank.

The pilot bearing doesn't really hold that much load. Think of it more as a stabalizer.

Yes replace the pilot bearing, They are cheap, easy to replace, but a pregnant dog to get to.

I wouldn't change the trans output bearing, or even open the case, unless you are going todo a full rebuild.

Just throw that crappy broke old one away. Malrins are factory flywheels just resurfaced and they are good to go.

I wouldn't but a Autozone clutch unless it was Asian.

The throw out bearing is what pushes againt the clutch and does all the "clutch" work. If you get a clutch kit, it will come with a new one. If the kit doesn't come with one, it's a cheap kit don't buy it.
If you see it, its for sale.

Yes you can.  When you have to do the work twice because you burned up the clutch a year later you will understand why.
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

Haha thanks for the advice, but these clutches have held up for over 7 years in most of my buddies rigs, shoot by that time ill be needing a better clutch but as for now it will do fine with my 90:1 crawl ratio their rigs have full exos, runners , and 223:1 crawl ratios and they dont even slip
