Shim spacing? Setting it up? HELP
« on: Dec 20, 2004, 08:16:17 PM »
I got the FSM and I've read the details.  W/o the SST it seems impossible since I don't trust the shims that are in it now as being correct, so just removing everything and replacing the shims that are there is not an option, it needs remeasuring.  I KNOW that the amount of shim now is incorrect for a fact...long story.  How hard is it to properly measure the necessary amount of shim?  Should I get some help?  Take it to the dealer? mechanic?  I've got to tear the axle down to rebuild both sides anyway, both sides leak and I suspect bad axle seals, so I'm just going to replace all suspect parts, beariing, felts, get some sheared off bolts out and replaced, etc.

Althought we have a SST type set up tool, it would only work on Toyota factory gears, so we do not use it.
Most aftermarker gear sets do not supply the proper pinion depth specs.
The gears are set up using factory shims, and the gear pattern is checks by using yellow gear marking compond.
If the gears have been put into service and driven with the wrong pattern, then trying to reset then will not work. Once the gear set has been run wrong, they cannot be reset to the proper pattern.

You need to take it to a reliable shop.

DOH! I was talking about the shims on the knuckle...sorry for being unclear!

So what about those shims and setting them up correctly?

I apologize for my stupidy :screwy:
After reading your post, it is very clear that you were working on the front end, what a dummy :moon:
Working 7 days a week, and posting late at night, I am doing the best I can :screwy:  :screwy:  :screwy:

The factory SST tool is not needed at all. Do not waste time measuring for the proper shims.
Instead, add shims untill you have a 15 lb preload on the new bearings, or 5 lbs on used bearings, then simply divide the shims in half and install them between the top and lower bearing caps.

We sell a very good, inexpensive pull scale for this.

Wish I had the time.
We are all so busy at the shop. I now have 8 employees, 9 including myself.
Hope your neck is getting better.
