glowing header
« on: Apr 22, 2009, 04:20:24 PM »
we have a carburated 22r with a header, been running fine, now all of a sudden the header is now glowing red and first start up, then after it warms up its ok then when trying to pull a hill it starts glowing again, the plugs look fine, but we have yet to figure out what is going on. please give us some ideas. truck has plenty of power and is snappy, its runs warmer than usually does.

Running lean will increase EGT's in the cylinder/head a little, but not much. Timing is a FAR greater factor in EGT's. All else remaining equal (fuel, timing, throttle position, :flamer: :flamer: :flamer:

that's probably why its running "snappy" and it will right tell you burn a hole in a piston I'm sure this was a "by sound" adjustments to the timing and carb do some research I'm sure you can find pics of plugs that will help you with the air/fuel... but take the time and put a timing gun to the engine so your timing isn't so advanced.......

yea  first time he goes full throttle  a valve will probably get eaten

i had 4 different valves do this before i figured out that a lean carb was the problem

"Later, I learned that even though I engage 4WD my hubs are not automatically locking? Something about manual locking hubs I think. What's manual mean? I need to read a manual to lock them? lol  So I found these neat autolocking hubs and installed them. Sometimes they dont stay locked while I am backing up, but that's fine because I dont have a backup camera to see where Im going (like our RV) so I just simply dont ever back up"- BigMike
