So my muffler started buzzing terribly after wheeling yesterday, so I finally took a look at it a few minutes ago. I just couldn't stand the buzz anymore. I washed it off just for this. Here is what I found. I must have put a rock or something into it...but I am not really sure what happened.

Actually... I am going to try this. It was only $3, and I decided what the heck, why not. I will try to fix it so I don't have to do anything to it until I buy my new stuff.

I wanted to see what this new "high tech" stuff will do. I will leave the super redneck stuff to the non-imports. I already have a few "custom hangers" made from bailing wire to hold up my rusting out pipe.

I agree that good glasspacks are, well, good. Cherrybombs are cheap and blow out fast. I don't like the cherrybombs.

I think I am going to go with a Spintech muffler, part number 6221 or 3221. It is compact so I hopefully won't do what I did to the stock muffler. The magnaflow seems like it would just be too big. But if the spintech fails to impress me, I will go with the magnaflow. Maybe I will have a nice exhaust system that won't make me want to pass out before Christmas. Which muffler should I go with, the 6221 or 3221? I want the one that is quieter, but I cant figure out which one is quiter by looking at the descriptions. Help?

http://spintechmufflers.com/spintech/spintechindex.asp

When comparing the flow tests, the 3221 got 170, and the 6221 got 180. Does that mean that the 3221 would be quieter?

My dad said he will pay half the cost of the cat back because its loud and pisses him off. So I decided to use the spintech and see how it does. I just can't decide on which one to use. I want the quieter one, but I don't know which is quieter, so I may end up having my dad call them and find out which one to use.

I'd get the 3225XL.  this is the one I was looking at getting, it is the most quite one they make.
1986 Toyota 4Runner 22re 5spd transmission and dual transfer cases (4.7’s in the rear). E-lockers front and rear.

2005 GMC Sierra diesel, compound turbo setup to pull.

Those are a little too pricy. Should I go with centered inlet and outlet? Maybe I will ask the guy bending up the system for me what to buy, offset or centered in/outlet. But I would like to go with one of those XLs. Maybe I can get some early Christmas money from some people and buy the XL one.

Really? you gonna have daddy  :phone: ...  :therethere:

I knew something like that was coming, but I'm lazy, he has a phone, I'll just let him do it. Besides I hate talking on phones; I can't see who I am talking to. I will if I have to, but whatever.
I am going to the muffler shop Saturday to get a quote, and depending upon how expensive it will be, I will decide what muffler to go with. If it is only going to be like a hundred bucks, then I will go with the spintech. If its like $150 then I will probably go with the magnaflow. But it also depends upon how much money I can gather before I do this whole project as to what muffler to go with. Exhaust is a love/hate kind of thing- I love messing with it, but I hate trying to get it right.

I have had bad experiences with those mufflers on a friends ranger. It sounded ok from idle to about 2000 rpm, but after that it was obnoxiously loud. Maybe toys are different, I don't know.

Anybody have videos or soundbytes of their rigs with whatever your exhaust setup is? Post up!

Look at the quality difference of magna flow to flowcrapper you got stainless steel that's rolled and welded nice and straight on the sides and then you got galvanized tin that has spot welded sound chambers inside.  One has a lifetime warranty and one makes your truck sound like a pretend V8.  Magna flow sounds a little ricy but hey they are rice.

you can complain all you want, but the fact is i have owned them as well as many poeple i know on anything from a 4 banger to a stroked 383 chevy and never had any problems! As for how they sound there are many different types that create different sound and they are available in stainless. As i have never owned a magna flow i can not speak to the quality.

Magna-Flow is a better product.  Of course, you don't NEED 2.5" with a 22R/22RE.  2.25 is better because the engine needs some back-pressure.

I attempted to fix my muffler today, here is a kind of step by step of what I did.
Ready to be worked on:

Hole to be fixed:

Stuff needed (minus bailing wire and can):

Cut bandage into 24 inch strips, covered them with white stuff, cut tube to create patch cover:

Place cut up tube over hole, place strips around muffler and patch:

That was supposed to be it, but I added some more stuff:

And now she is quiet-ish again!

It does look quite funny (giant ACE bandage), and I just took it for a drive, but it didn't really quiet it down very much. Is that "heatshield" thing above the muffler important at all? It was about to fall off, so I tightened it back up, but one of the bolts broke off. Should I just remove it? Now the muffler has a bunch of black liquid running out of it. I should probably go and buy the header and test pipe now. I will probably do it today or tomorrow, get my garage cleaned out, install it, then drive it down to the muffler shop with an open header. That will be fun! I can race a civic! Well I guess the fix was worth a try, and I think I might have actually liked it more before I did all this crap to it. Ok, laugh away everyone!

I drew a picture of how I am going to have the exhaust. I think I might go with the magnaflow, because it is stainless steel, it is cheaper than the spintech, and it has a lifetime warranty. I just don't know if I should go with the 18" or 27 " muffler. If I can (space limitations), I will try to go with the 27 inch one because I don't want loud, and I am assuming that 27" vs. 18" the 27" will be quieter. This one is for the 7 inch round offset 2.25 inch in/out magnaflow XL It goes header, flange, testpipe, flange, pipe, "S" pipe, lower offset side of muffler, upper offset side of muffler, flange, exit pipe.
