Timing issues

i didnt mark my timing on my distributor whet i did a head gasket on my 20r i did the trick with the finger on the number one pistion turned it over untel it blew my finger out and then put the distributor on the number one piston but didnt work any tricks or somthing i did wrong ....could it might have been on  the exhaust stroke?? thanks guys

exhaust stroke wouldnt push your finger off,

do it again and when you get the push of air,  look down at your crankshaft pulley and put the timing mark on 0*


you really should remove the valve cover so you can see where its going, but  using the dist cap, mark where #1 is, (should point at the vacuum advance)   then  turn it past so when it slides over the gear it comes to rest on the right spot

k ill try it ..i didnt take timing chain off the crank i just put marks on the cam and the chain which i dont think its off i had the motor running but had to stop it and didnt want to start again  =s ..so when you say when i get the air look down at the pully and put it on 0 if not then put ur dist. on #1?? right??

:wall:  ok  i'll say this again,  it doesnt matter about the marks on the chain forget about them

turn the motor by hand till its got the timing mark on the crank pulley lined up with the ZERO on the timing mark on the oilpump housing

then look at where the cam is at,  the timing mark on the cam should be 1/2 tooth to the passenger side of top aka 12 o clock

make sure you hold the chain tight while you turn  the crank assuming its not on the cam

if it binds up at any time DONT FORCE IT :slap:
