Hello i recently bought a 1985 with a clean looking motor 170 dry compression 180 wet . It doesn't have a 22r it has a 22re valve cover but has the stock carb aisin replaced it with a weber DGEV. took off the egr and covered that hole. Ran fine but would diesel sometimes. so i attacked the timing it was super advanced so i tried to make it right. "do not mess with stuff when its not broke". So vacuum lines on dizzy plugged- 0 degrees runs  alright but doesn't start good carb bogs out. only runs good at 15 degrees and up. When the truck is turned off hot and started 2-20 minutes later i get a crazy NO OIL tappet noise coming from the valve/ timing chain area. goes away after heavy 1 minute idol. That's with 0-12 degrees of timing I've messed with it for 2 weeks. if i go with a super advanced time it never happens but i feel this is bad for the motor so my mind cant let it go so i mess with it and I'm back to square one everyday.

changed oil 10 40 Napa gold filter
Checked timing chain guides look good FROM TOP but are plastic
adjusted valves they were tight sound is a little louder now. Did this when motor was hot..
Checked harmonic balancer at TDC 0 degrees checked distributor reinstalled it correctly
did rotor and cap. checked wires and new plugs
sea foam

feel like Ive already rebuild the engine by checking everything I'm going crazy. ANy advise or help thanks I'm in Medford Oregon if you want to come by http://board.marlincrawler.com/Smileys/marlin/beerchug.gif

Is the vacuum advance canister still connected? You should be checking the timing with the vacuum canister disconnected but plug the line.... Then set your timing. Then reconnect the canister to vacuum.
