gas hand

i have a 1989 two wheel drive toyota pickup, and i was woundering if anyone has had the same problem that ive had ? the gas hand will work if it's full, or till about 3/4 tank then just drops down to empty. if anyone has had the same problem what can i do to fix. thanks

You mean "Gas Gauge?" 


Yeah, you may have to get a new sending unit and drop the tank!  Once you pull the unit, you will see what I'm talking about.

Check all related connections before going that far into it though, could just be a loose wire or a factory connector that's gone bad.

had the same problem in my old 77, the wire on the sending unit in the tank had a bad spot. Gauge worked fine from full to a half tank, once it hit that bad spot the gauge would drop to empty.

I just left it alone, it was an $800 truck and I knew how far I could go on a tank so it wasnt a big deal. The only reason I ever found out the cause was because the fuel pump died and stranded me in Oregon. I had to drop the tank to put a new one in. the pic is just the closest I could find but the red circle is where the bad spot on mine was.

thanks for the info. mine is just a $300 dollar truck so i'll prob just figure out how far i can go, and leave it at that.
