Ok so here's some pics. 1st two show the pilot hole I drilled, The next to show the results of the 1st attempt on wheel #1 as you can see it snapped of above the taper and you can also see my anger taken out on the rim.

The next series shows when things go the way they are supposed to.....

Your rim is not looking too healthy there sir!

A kid in my auto class had a similar problem with his durango last year. We decided to use the 3/4 inch impact and just keep cranking down on it. The stud eventually snapped so we could get the wheel off. I still think he is running around with only 4 lugnuts. It sucks that this thing is being such a PITA. Good luck!

It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the fact that the reason I'm even trying to take them off is it needs brakes like yesterday. Everything would have been fine if they'd just come off now I also see the signs of the rotors getting tore up too. So that's gonna cost even more since I figure that I'm going to be getting new rotors now. Campfire Girl would have been OK with driving the Corvair but they don't have air and it's 110 here.

break out the air chizzle and cut the edge of the nut thats left in the rim or use the chiz to pound the stud through the last of the threads on the nut.

Wow. If those weren't so deeply recessed I'd just have used a Dremel and cut two notches on the bolt to snap it in half. Least you got one off. Heh. I'd probably still use that rim for a spare, though - it's ugly but not like it's cracked and unusable.

Not much progress today, in fact I snapped a drill bit off inside and it won't come back out, GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! So I drilled another hole next to it stupid thing still won't come out, I think this one is fused on. Had to do month end paperwork too so didn't spend alot of time on it either. I have come to the conclusion that tomorrow I'm going to the extreme. Since the rim is tore up I'm just gonna melt the sucker.

This whole thing has been amazing, and hard to imagine without seeing those pics! Can't wait to see the next ones...
Makes me glad I do my own tire rotations -- of course that won't help a bit if some kid botches it when I buy new tires.

Poor babies it's not bad at all, in fact the rim is still useable. I'll post some pics later I don't have my camera's cord here at work. Of course it won't be used as a primary rim anymore but it'll work as spare for now. I'm gonna do the brakes tomorrow on my day off, I already bought the pads and new rotors since I'm quite sure the rotors are now pretty ground up.

The wheels look bad, but will still work.

This is why I make the tire guys put the lugnuts on by hand.

It's OK to snug them up with air and then us a torque wrench to finish them off, yeah the one rim is ugly but still works fine just can't get a lug nut on it anymore. The spare tire is also a mag so once I get the new tires for it I'm going to make the cut one a spare.

Yeah run them with a airgun, when you got somebody experienced doing it. But when you got a newb at the tire store, they will run them down by hand! That's the way I have it done, just to keep from having a problem like you just had, except on the hwy with a flat would get really costly, when you got to call a tow truck!

Yeah I would have been pissed to have to be towed over a stupid flat, and on top of that I have taken it offroad far enough to have been an issue. Not any tough trails but far and tough enough out there to have been impossible for a tow truck to get to. I would have had to drive in on the flat until I reached pavement. I do have AAA Premium RV though so getting home would not be an issue.
