Lets get it on
« on: Jan 22, 2004, 11:25:29 AM »
I'm pumped, 2 months ago I blew a head gasket and found out I had a cracked head :maddest:....Talked to marlin and he said he can do me a a new head.  After further discussion, we decided that since I am going to rip it apart and my engine has over 250k miles it would be better to do it all.  So I pulled the moter and dropped it off at Marlins.

I just got the call that it is all done .  Since it is out I am also replacing the clutch with a heavy duty clutch, I got my 4.70 gears to go in the Xcase.  And I am trying to squeze out the dough for a rear locker.  Add that to my 4" lift and new tires and I am ready to go :king:

Question, I am going to do the usaul changes like the plugs and wires, oil and filter, air filter.  But is there anything that you all suggest me to do while I am knee deep in the engine compartment

good time to check the
motor mounts,
flush the heater core,
weld a chain to the frame if you're running dual cases,
and run an extended front axle diff breather hose.

fuel injected?
if so, make sure to change the fuel filter, a definite pain when its in the truck, and you might consider having the injectors serviced. Spending the hours to clean out your manifold will pay dividends in driveability and throttle response.

New engine = New radiator, Fan clutch, water pump, hoses, and everything else that cools your engine.   At least that is what I did. I also installed a set of Auto Meter Oil Pressure, and Temp guages so I could monitor my new baby.  Just an idea but I didn't want to rely on the stock guages to tell me what I want to know.

Yeah he is right if it is fuel injected then spend the dough to change the injectors and seals n stuff.  They are a biiatch to do after you got it all together.

Get the raidator gone thur, or replace it with a new one!
Before you install a cheap fan clutch, add some new silicon from the dealer to the factory heavy-duty one.
Your motor comes with a new water pump already
Bring me your exhaust mainafold, so I can surface it for you...

Thanks, Marlin

I have herd of guy having there injectors balanced and report great improvement but have not done t myself..You could cain down you mtr mounts while its out to prevent the new mounts from bust'n loose. Now that you have the gear set its a matter of time till you want duel cases and that means more wear on the motor mounts..Yea,,I agree with marlin on the clutch..Seems any clutch other then the toy clutch just don;t stand up to the jop of cooling as well as the asian one that comes stock..

Marlin says bring him the exhuast manifold then the manifold goes to him.  I have also been thinking about getting a new radiator.  Since that is something else you all recommended, should I get a stock replacement or go with something a litttle more heavy duty for cooling on the trail.  Oh ya and its carb not injected

I have a turbo rad it bolts right in and stays pretty cool. mine stays at a 1/4 on the stock guage most of the time the hotest it has got was about 1/2 and i run it without a fan shroud. It broke a long time ago and i never got another one.

Its been a long time coming, but I finally got everything going . Everything got put on hold when a week after I got the motor back I also lost my job .  So know I am in the working force again and everything is up and running. INcluding new exhuast from the manifold down, the header will come later. I also have aquired a wide rear axle with wheel spacers to match the front, complete hysteer including the steering box. Also my dad is going to up grade his 3rd members, and I am going to get his 4.88 and both lockers.  Combine that with the 4.70's I have, the new motor and I am set to roll :driving:
