Moving front axle 2" forward
« on: Jul 18, 2004, 07:38:41 PM »
Just a tip, I have an 87 4runner with a solid axle swap running 36x12:50's. I ran into the problem of my tire compressing into my inner fender at full flex and jamming my steering up, so I was about to buy new springs anyways and decided to have the fronts punched two inchs forward to solve this problem.

Well stoopid me I did'nt take into account the possible repercusions of this and it ended up now I have $900.00 in custom springs from Alcan and when my truck flex's now my tie rod clips my drag link. And I just thought I couldnt steer before with a tire jammed in the fender!

Well, long story short if any of you guys are having this problem and want to move your axle forward and are running hi steer, my buddy with the same setup as me got away with 1.5" without no problem, if you wanna push it that extra .5 of an inch you might get into a major goat roping. Ended up I had to spend all day making brackets to move my steering gear box forward to compensate.

The only problem with yotota steering boxes is that the pitman arm swings to the rear.  A scoutII box swings to the front so you can mount the steering box in the same place that you would mount the toyota box, but you could put the front axle in front of the truck.  I have the axle on my 90 moved ahead about 3 inches now and the steering box is mounted next to the driverside motor mount.

If you use a power steering box from a late model Land Cruiser 60/62/80 series you can do the same thing.  The TLC box mounts using four (4) bolts instead of three.  Reference - Toyota Trails, July/August 2003 pp34-41.

seems if you had hysteer you drag link/tierod problems would be the same as his, possible worse

When I mounted the steering box the axle was moved forward 6".  I moved it back to comply with Calrocs regs.  The pitman arm that is on the box is a 2" drop also.  Somehow I had enough forthought to use it instead of the stock one I have.  I figure if I need the clearance I can notch the bottom of the frame for clearance. I would have moved the axle back but I dont have too much contact with the tires now but I will this winter when I put the 40" gumbo snow tires on so it'll go back forward.

Yes the pressure hose has a uae fitting which is typical to saginaw boxes.  The box has about the same ratio as yota its 4 turns lock to lock.

I agree with dirtyskivies,,,just cut the body out a little bit and move your box forward till it clears..It won't take much..I was surprised how little i jad to move the box to clear the steering..
Forgiveness is between them and god..
Its my job to arrange the meeting!
