Relocated front axle 2" forward, how'd you do IFS box?
« on: Aug 22, 2005, 08:50:12 PM »
Buddies got an 85' Standard cab and he works nights so we're helping him out and installing the IFS box for him, along with mounting it.

He's got Alcan springs that relocated his front axle forward 2" so now the IFS box needs to be relocated 2" forward but the body gets in the way.

Anyone else have this problem?  did you just do a Body lift so it would clear or did you cut it?

Personally i'd cut the section out so I kept my heigth low but I bet he's gonna do the 3" body lift...

Btw reason the IFS box needs to be relocated is because the tie rods hit real bad if the axle articulated up or down so its inevitable.

Dont do the body lift.  Anything over 2" sucks imo.  Just cut the core support out a bit and mount the box a bit flatter than it needs to be.  Then either get a 2x pitman arm from a truck with power steering or get a flat pitman arm.  He'll thank me later. ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Ya, I rotated my box almost flat, then lengthened the steering shaft a bit so it would reach.

heres mine I had on my first gen and it is the same on my second just not as clean. Just cut out whatever needs to be cut.  There are ways to do it clean i used an air hammer in these pics and it was way nicer than what I did with the sawzall on my new truck.

Here's mine...I touch the spring just as the tire starts to hit the firewall at lock and the spring is perfectly flat, I havent decided if I want to go flat pitman, or just bumpstop it there.

IFS is best kept at ambient temperature in a pile of scrap in the backyard.  When kept under a functioning vehicle, it tends to greatly diminish said vehicle's offroad ability.     -reklund5

so how far forward can the axle go, can the drag link be in line with the tie rod?

Drag link must always clear the front of the tie rod...If you move the axle forward so that you don't have that clearance, you must relocate steering box farther forward.

you only need about an inch of room between the two,,,so if you look at the above pic you could prolly go about another inch forward..the space where the drag link and tir rod attach to the pass side arm is about all the space you need..problem moving the axle farther forward on the spring puts your castor way off..
