90 pickup will not stay in 4x4
« on: May 21, 2008, 08:34:34 AM »
OK I was reffed to this forum because they said you guys are the best. I am super new to this so please bare with me. Also forgive this being my first post I am desperate. I did check i did check in.

I am having trouble with my 90 3.0 pickup slipping (sounds more like a clunk) out of 4x4. The lever doesn't actually move and the gear ratio stays the same when in 4L. It just clunks out.

I have talked to a guy locally and he really didn't even believe that a Toyota would do this. Almost called me a liar. Any way I have checked to make sure that my after market manual hubs didn't have too much grease and cause a vacuum. which they did but not the problem. Next I checked the ADD system to make sure the vsv's were working and all the hoses were intact. Finally I just changed the oil in the T.C. and grease in the diff.'s. Should have been the first thing I just wasn't thinking.

OK, some of the guys in Yotatech said that I may be able to just replace the two springs that hold the levers (i guess thats what they do) in the front of the T.C.

Is this what you guys think I should do? Well, it is what I am going to do first. I just want to know of any other possibility other than my T.C. needing a rebuild or as phill thinks my Tran's syncro's  being bad.

PLEASE HELP :gap:

Do you have a body lift on it?
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

x2
My 4Runner has a 2" body lift on it & it did ther same thing. I had to trim the shifter ring & the boot. My old 1st gen & had to cut the floor but that had a 3" body lift  :twocents:

Assuming you don't have a body lift, then yes, get the heavy duty springs found here: http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/transfercase/tcase_ac.htm

Yes I do have a body lift. T.C. shifter stays in place when it falls out. In other words its not coming out of mesh. It sounds like its falling out of gear. It worked in this configuration for a while I assume as I just got the truck. It at least worked for me for a couple of days.

With a bodylift it will push the shifter just enough to pop it out of gear. If you can give the shifter a little push and it works again this is your problem. What happens is the shifter boot on the trans bumps the boot of the tcase and pops it out of gear or in some cases the floor board needs to be trimmed to keep it from bumping it. The torque of the engine will cause the shifter to move into the floor board bumping out of gear. There is an extensive write up by someone around here on bodylifts and the things that could be an issue. This exact issue is addressed, I have a link to the thread at home and I'll post it if I can't find it. If you have a 2 inch bodylift just push the boot for the trans below the big lip of the stick and leave it there. If you have a 3 inch you will more than likely have to trim the opening.

if it is a body lift problem, here is another idea for you.   just cut the floor and flip it!

I'd flat belly mine before I'd do that.

Checked and my floor board is cut to allow clearance. The T.C. shifter isn't coming out of mesh. The springs helped but didnt do the trick. I wonder if it has to do with the truck having ADD and manual hubs?

Thanks for the help everyone.

How 'bout your boots?  I hammered back the body to clearance it, and still had the problem.  Turned out to be the boots on the shifters pulling it out.  Mine wouldn't disengage completely, just enough to pop it out of 4wd, but it didn't look like the shifter ever moved.  I cut the 1 piece boot down the middle between the sleeves, and haven't had the problem since.

That's what I'm thinking BD, FYI since you moved the body up and in effect moved the shifter down it will make the boot move a longer distance during shifting. This will cause the boots of both the shifter and the t-case to hit each other and will push the t-case out of gear when it's in 4wd low. The best way to fix this issue is to just push the shifter boot all the way down past the large section of the shifter.

Either that or take the boot off and drive it around like that to see if it still does it.
