'85 dual cases
« on: Feb 06, 2008, 07:59:55 PM »
i have an 85 runner 22rE and i am putting dual cases in it. Both cases are from an '85 and top shifters, one is a 4:1 and a stock t-case, i am using the 4:1 in the back and the stock one's reduction box, Correct? Does anybody have pictures other than the one on MC of the shifting rods and how long they should be on this setup? The photo on MC shows that both shift rods are open ended where you weld the keystock but neither of the rods i have look like this? Trying to see if i need to weld on the key stock.
The MC also says : If your rear-most case is out of a 1985 to 1988 top shifting EFI (W56-A/B) tranny then you must shorten the driver's side shift rod. This is the shift rod sticking out of the rear most case when you shift into 4hi that has the flat side on top. You must trim 1/2" off of the front of this shift rod to avoid jamming between the two cases." Just would like to see some more photos of where to cut.
Thanks- B

The instructions on the MC site is for a forward shifting case, that is why yours looks different. 1)Yes you need to weld the keystock to the driverside shift fork in the reduction box right under the reduction box shifter. The purpose of this is to keep the shifter shaft in place, because you will only have one shift rail now instead of two. Previously your shift rails looked liked this [], with the shifter rod going in the middle. With the passenger side gone it should look like this [. You weld the keystock so that it looks like this[ with the open end boxed in by the keystock if that makes any sense.

2) Yes you do need to shorten the driver side shift rail on the rear most case 1/2" so that the two shift rods don't hit eachother when in different shifting combo's.

hope you can make sense of my rambling.

just mounted up the reduction box to the adaptor , but now the shifter with the key stock welded to it does not want to slide in and out very easy, seems just too tight do you ever have to modify shifter rod?  looks the same as the MC site and fearofrunner's instructions - any ideas?

Mine is pretty stiff too, not bad just stiffer than my rear case. I just figured that it will loosen up over time.
