Winch mount problem
« on: Aug 16, 2007, 10:02:26 PM »
I know someone that has a winch & is willing to sell it to me. It's a Warn 12,000lb  The problem is the front mounting bolt that go into the aluminum housing have been cross threaded, actually 3 bolts . I'm sure a heli coil kit would be good enough since the bolts hold the winch in place, & winching in a straight line should be fine. The conceren I have is if I have to winch at an angle. What do you think?

How much aluminum is around the hole?

If there's plenty of aluminum, I'd do a threaded insert (case saver) and it would most likely be stronger than original.........  (A threaded insert is slightly bigger than a helicoil, but has the advantage of using normal tap sizes, not the special helicoil taps)

Drill them out and use a nut.
