Winch mount
« on: Jul 06, 2004, 02:02:09 PM »
I have the factory front bumper right now, want to mount a winch. I'd just like to fab a mount for the winch itself, add bumper extension later. I have a welder, winch is an 8000lb salvage. I have searched, any pics of a basic design, suggestions? Function over form, don't care how it looks, long as it works. I've never mounted a winch before, want to do it right.

you could cut a section out of the bumper so u can get to the frame crossmember. then weld a 1/4 in plate to it. and from the plate weld some bracing to the lower part of the crossmember

Trying to steal my Trashy ideas eh'?  lol I have yet to completely finish the plate but its nearing completion.  I still need to cut some bar stock 1/4" x 2" to run from the top corners of the plate to the front crossmember.  The red steel is 3/8" x 3" angle, thesuports on the bottom of the plate are 3/8" x 2" bar stock (old set of shackles  )  I just buttwelded the plate to the angle iron and welded the bottom supports across bothe the angle and the bottom of the plate.  Easy as pie.

you could cut a section out of the bumper so u can get to the frame crossmember. then weld a 1/4 in plate to it. and from the plate weld some bracing to the lower part of the crossmember

I had Rock Ware notch out my stock bumper in `99 for a standard winch plate and braced it to the frame and a cross member.

And then when I could afford it I had them build a real bumper around the winch plate.

The Rock Ware design is exactly   what I was thinking about, and I really like some elements of Trash's setup. I started cutting this AM, will post pics when I'm done with the main stuff. It will take me a few days at least, need to do some serious homework; turns out they don't give extra credit for 4x4 fabrication, when your major is education. Wonder why? :dunno:
