Starting issues
« on: Jun 16, 2007, 06:35:09 PM »
alright, ive got an 84 with the 22r and sometimes the truck will start up everytime, and ill have no issues for weeks. until a day like today where i go to start it and, nothing, the starter just clicks. ive got full charge on the battery, cleaned ALL the connections, have a good rebuilt starter, good wires, good ground, so im all out of ideas. anything would be appreciated, i hate getting stranded for hours  :help:

Is it a good load click or a click click click. if its a good load click I would check your solinoid contacts inside the starter. It sounds like the plunger is kicking the drive out but not making conection between the battery cable post and the starter cable post. You can put a test light on the starter cable post and try to start it if it lights up your starter is bad if it does not its your solinoid contacts. I have seen one starter that the drive gear teeth did not mesh perfectly with the ring gear when kicked out so the plunger could not make contact (the drive gear tooth would hit the ring gear tooth and not mesh with one another but if it meshed it was fine). If its a click click click could be a ground problem how is the small ground wire going to the relay box next to the battery?
